Capes News – January 2026

Annual Giving Campaign

We again showed our community that we care this past holiday season! This is the fourth year we have collectively contributed to help local organizations. Some 13 homeowners from The Capes heeded the call and donated $2,800 to the Tillamook Food Bank and $2,050 to the Netarts Oceanside Rural Fire Protection District.

Thank you all for you generosity and caring about our broader community. We have much for which to be to be proud of and thankful for as we celebrate the beginning of this new year.

We appreciate you!

Warm regards,
Susan Hunter, Vice President
HOA Board of Directors

What’s in the Sky in January

-Written by Jason Scully

Hello Capers! As many of you know, I love taking photos of the stars and the thousands of galaxies and deeps space objects we get to enjoy in our dark skies. Over the last couple of months however we’ve seen nothing but rain, wind and clouds. Sometimes it seems like we’ll never see the stars again! So I’m going to try a rigorous scientific experiment. Maybe if I write about the wonders that will reveal themselves in our skies in January, Mother Nature will cooperate and give us at least a few clear nights to catch a glimpse.

January 1st-6th—Quadrantids Meteor Shower

The Quadrantids is a short but sweet meteor shower that will peak in the early morning hours of January 4th. At its peak you may see 120 meteors an hour! Some of these meteors may even appear as flame balls. While you’ll see some meteors throughout the sky, the focus will be in our North sky. The shower is specifically centered on the constellation Bootes, which will be just east of the North Star on the morning of January 4th. The best way to see these meteors is to turn out all the lights and let your eyes get adjusted to the dark, then look to the part of the North sky that you can see. Keep your vision as wide as possible so that you can catch the movement. I wouldn’t recommend binoculars or a telescope for this one as you want to see as much of the sky as possible.

Anytime in January—Andromeda Galaxy

This is one of my favorites. It is the closest spiral galaxy to us at 2.5 million lights years away. Unlike most galaxies, which are moving away from us, this one is moving towards us at approximately 300km/sec. No need to worry though. Andromeda won’t collide with our galaxy for another 4 billion years. Throughout January, Andromeda will be right around the zenith just after sunset near the bright star Alpheratz. You may be able to make out a smudge with the naked eye if it’s very dark. With larger binoculars you’ll be able to see what looks like an oval cloud with tiny speckles, and you may even see Andromeda’s companion galaxies.

Keep looking up and clear skies Capers!
