Water Conservation and Fire Safety
As we head into the heart of fire season, we have an important reminder for everyone in our community: please conserve water and help protect our homes and neighbors.
As we shared yesterday, our water system is under significant strain during the summer months. In July alone, we metered 522,406 gallons of water, including approximately 35,207 gallons lost to leaks. Some properties used several times more than the typical monthly household usage. We are asking everyone, particularly those using irrigation, to reduce normal watering by 50–60%.
This year, water conservation is about more than keeping up with summer demand. Our communities are under HIGH-RISK fire danger through September, and fire fuel loads are extremely high.
Chief McBrayer from the Netarts-Oceanside Rural Fire Protection District is strongly encouraging residents and visitors to:
- Create defensible space around your home and property.
- Forgo outdoor burning and fire pits through this period of elevated fire danger. (Not that we do that here at The Capes anyway, right? RIGHT?)
- Familiarize yourself with your evacuation routes.
- Have a Go Bag/Evacuation Bag ready to grab if needed.
The Chief has also provided the following designated safety zones in the event evacuation routes become impassable:
- Netarts: Boat Ramp / Schooner Restaurant parking lot
- Oceanside: Oceanside Beach parking lot
- Additional: Happy Camp Beach, with limited access and parking
We all hope we never have to use those safety zones. But preparedness is one of those things that is much easier to appreciate before you need it.
And when it comes to water, the last thing any of us would want is to have a wildfire emergency and find that there isn’t enough water available in the system to adequately fight it. Every gallon we conserve now helps keep our community’s water resources available when we need them most.

The Transmission Line: It’s Finally Happening!
After what may feel like approximately 1,000 years of planning, permitting, and construction, the long-awaited Tillamook to Oceanside transmission line is finally nearing the finish line! The project is expected to be completed and fully operational in September 2026.
The new transmission line and substation will provide Oceanside with a second source of power, adding important redundancy and improving the reliability of our electrical service.
